FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Waco, Texas, Nov. 16, 2020- The Humane Society of Central Texas has announced that, due to an influx of about 100 animals, they have reached full capacity. Because the shelter is overwhelmed, they will have to euthanize some of the more long-standing rescues.

In response to this problem, the Human Society has offered free adoptions through Nov. 11. They are also encouraging members of the community to foster animals as they await adoption.

The sudden rise in numbers of animals is suspected to have arisen from the hard financial times that many Waco residents have found themselves in. Because of job loss and income cuts, many families can no longer afford to keep their pets. The shelter takes in strays, rescues and animals whose owners can no longer afford them.

“I know many people have been hit hard by the current economic downturn in our community and maybe can't afford to feed and take care of an animal, and that's why we are seeing more animals being surrendered,” Nate Langley, longtime shelter volunteer, said.

The shelter has maintained a “no-kill” status for the past two years. About 94% of animals that entered the shelter, left alive. “No-kill” status is the golden standard for most shelters and was only recently achieved by The Humane Society of Central Texas when the city took over operations.

To maintain this status, people of Waco must step up and volunteer to save the lives of these innocent animals.

“We are hopeful that our Waco community is going to come down and help us save these animals,” Executive Director Dr. Paula Rivadeneira said in an interview, “we believe that every Waco animal deserves a chance to live their best life”.

Baylor Student Pop-up Shop

Baylor students aim to raise money for anti-human trafficking efforts

Waco, Texas March 30, 2021. Baylor students will set up a pop-up shop on Fountain Mall to raise money for As Our Own to fight human trafficking between noon and 8 p.m on Tuesday, March 30.

“Students with small businesses have committed to giving 80% of their profits to As Our Own. These Baylor students have been so willing to step up for a greater cause, it has really been inspiring” said the event coordinator, Kat Ogle.

Students will be selling jewelry, thrifted clothes, clay earrings, homemade bread and more at the event. There will be volunteers directing foot traffic and ensuring social distancing.

Ninety percent of the proceeds will go directly to anti-human trafficking non-profit, As Our Own. As Our Own is based out of Houston, Tx and does the majority of their work in India.

As Our Own’s mission is: “To transform the way the world cares for vulnerable children”.

The money raised will directly fund As Our Own’s new orphanage located on the outskirts of Mumbai.

Thanks to the inspiring amount of students who have stepped up to donate and volunteer, we are confident we will reach our goal of $10,000.
